ZONEDE’s Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar system enables dynamic testing of large and coarse-particle materials under high strain rates.

ZONEDE has introduced a Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar system designed for dynamic mechanical characterization of non-metallic materials under high strain-rate impact loading.

The Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar system features large-diameter pressure bars measuring Φ50 mm and Φ80 mm. Therefore, it can support testing of rocks, concrete, geomaterials, and other large-sized specimens.

The system provides researchers with a controlled platform for studying material behavior under dynamic loading conditions. Moreover, its large-bar design helps address testing requirements that can be challenging for conventional systems.

Designed for Large and Coarse-Particle Materials

The Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar system follows one-dimensional stress wave theory. As a result, researchers can investigate dynamic stress-strain responses, material strength, deformation behavior, and failure mechanisms.

Its large-diameter configuration is particularly suitable for coarse-particle materials. These include rock, concrete, cement-based composites, geomaterials, polymers, and large structural components.

Additionally, the system provides an experimental platform for geotechnical engineering, construction materials research, and protective structure studies.

Wide Range of Research Applications

The system supports several research fields. In geotechnical engineering, it can help study the dynamic behavior and failure mechanisms of rock, concrete, and geomaterials.

For construction materials research, it supports high strain-rate constitutive modeling and impact resistance evaluation. Furthermore, transportation infrastructure research can use the system to examine pavement materials, bridge components, and tunnel support structures.

Academic research and education can also benefit from the platform. Researchers can conduct fundamental studies of material dynamics, impact mechanics, and laboratory teaching applications.

Stable Testing and Integrated Data Acquisition

The split-Hopkinson pressure bar system combines a rigid cast-iron support platform with precision alignment brackets. This configuration is designed to support stable stress-wave transmission during testing.

The system offers a strain-rate range of 10²–10³ s⁻¹ and a working pressure range of 0.07–0.6 MPa. Its data acquisition system can reach up to 4 MHz per channel.Customization is available for more specific requirements.

Meanwhile, the optional temperature range extends from -150°C to +500°C. An optional dynamic confining pressure system can provide axial or radial confining pressure up to 40 MPa.

Flexible Configurations for Experimental Needs

Researchers can configure the Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar system with several optional functions. These include a high-temperature furnace, low-temperature environmental chamber, and axial/radial confining pressure device.

In addition, high-speed camera synchronization, digital image correlation, pulse shaping technology, and automated data processing software are available.

With these configurations, the system provides a flexible research platform for dynamic material testing across demanding experimental environments.

Supporting Next-Generation Dynamic Material Research

As research continues to focus on the dynamic response of large-scale and non-metallic materials, specialized testing equipment is becoming increasingly important.

The split-Hopkinson pressure bar System provides researchers with large-specimen testing capability, stable experimental performance, flexible environmental control, and integrated data acquisition.

Together, these features make the system suitable for advanced studies involving rocks, concrete, geomaterials, polymers, and large structural components.
