From November 22 to 24, 2018, the 8th International Conference on High-Speed Machining (ICHSM) and the 3rd Workshop on PVD-Coated Tools for High-Speed Cutting (WPCCT)—collectively known as ICHSM&WPCCT 2018—was held in Guangzhou University Town.

The International Conference on High-Speed Machining (ICHSM) is an academic conference jointly initiated by the PTW Institute at the Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany) and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (China), and co-organized with various relevant universities across my country. It stands as the earliest international conference series established within my country's high-speed machining sector; to date, seven successful editions have been held in Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Jinan, Harbin, and Xi'an.
The Workshop on PVD-Coated Tools for High-Speed Cutting (WPCCT) is an academic conference jointly initiated and organized by Guangdong University of Technology and the University of Nantes (France). Two editions of this workshop have previously been held in Guangzhou and Nantes.
This joint conference was co-initiated by the PTW Institute at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Guangdong University of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shandong University, and the University of Nantes. It was hosted by Guangdong University of Technology, co-organized by the Dongguan CNC Cutting Tool Industry Association, and supported by organizations including the Guangdong Society of Mechanical Engineering. The conference aimed to foster exchange and collaboration regarding research findings and technical expertise among domestic and international research institutions, academic organizations, the machine tool and tooling industry, the coating service sector, and various manufacturing enterprises—specifically within the fields of high-speed, high-efficiency machining and coated cutting tools. Furthermore, it sought to create new opportunities for the theoretical and practical advancement of high-speed machining and coated tool technologies across the scientific, engineering, and industrial domains, serving as a platform to showcase the latest research achievements, exchange updates on current trends, share successful practical experiences, and explore future directions.
The opening ceremony was held on the morning of November 23 at the Guangzhou National Integrated Circuit Base within Guangzhou University Town. The event was attended by over 200 guests, including Conference Honorary Chairman Academician Zhou Kesong; Professor Liu Yihua, Executive Vice President and Secretary-General of the Guangdong Society of Mechanical Engineering; Professor Wang Chengyong, Vice President of Guangdong University of Technology; Professor He Ning of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Professor Chen Ming of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; and Professor Du Yong of Central South University. They were joined by a diverse group of experts, scholars, industry representatives, and media professionals from both China and abroad, all specializing in the fields of high-speed machining and coated cutting tools. The opening ceremony was presided over by the Conference Chairman, Professor Wang Chengyong, Vice President of Guangdong University of Technology. Speeches were delivered by the conference’s Honorary Chairman, Academician Zhou Kesong; Professor Wang Chengyong (representing the host institution, Guangdong University of Technology, on behalf of President Chen Xin); Conference Co-chair Professor He Ning of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (representing ICHSM); Conference Co-chair Professor Wang Qimin of Guangdong University of Technology (representing WPCCT); Conference Co-chair Professor Chen Ming of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; and Mr. Zhu Haibing, President of the co-organizer, the Dongguan CNC Cutting Tools Industry Association, among others.
