In a bold move to advance dynamic materials research, ZONEDE has introduced the Split Hopkinson Bar System. The new platform is designed to precisely explore the dynamic mechanical behavior of a wide range of materials under high strain-rate loading, enabling researchers to capture accurate stress-strain curves and support constitutive modeling and engineering simulations.

Split Hopkinson Bar System

Split Hopkinson Bar System Designed for High Strain-Rate Material Research

The Split Hopkinson Bar System covers a strain-rate range of 10²–10⁴s⁻¹, making it suitable for research involving rapid mechanical responses. Its working pressure is specified at 0.07–0.6 MPa, while the system supports bar diameters of Φ10/Φ20 mm. These two models are standardized; other diameters can be customized.

Two bar material options are highlighted in the technical specifications: high-strength spring steel and superhard aluminum. Other materials can be customized. This configuration provides flexibility for different experimental requirements while supporting the system's focus on dynamic mechanical testing.

The equipment also features a data acquisition rate of up to 4 MHz/channel. Customization is available if you have higher requirements. Helping researchers obtain detailed experimental data during rapid loading processes. For temperature-sensitive research, an optional temperature range of -150°C to +1000°C is available.

From Experimental Data to Engineering Analysis

A key positioning of the Split Hopkinson Bar System is its ability to support the collection of dynamic stress-strain data. These results can be used to establish constitutive equations and provide data support for engineering simulation and material R&D.

The testing principle shown for the system illustrates a coordinated process involving the loading section, incident bar, specimen, transmission bar, and measurement components. During testing, the dynamic response of the specimen is captured and processed to obtain material behavior data. This provides researchers with a structured approach to studying how materials perform under rapidly changing mechanical conditions.

Broad Research Applications

The system is presented for several typical application areas, including research on material dynamic mechanical properties, construction of high strain-rate constitutive models, generation of material parameters for impact, crashworthiness, penetration and blast simulations, and new material R&D and performance optimization.

The listed test materials include metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers and elastomers, fiber-reinforced composites, concrete and rock materials, additively manufactured materials, optically transparent materials, and ultra-high-performance materials. This broad material range makes the platform relevant to different areas of experimental mechanics and materials development.

Flexible Configuration for Advanced Observation

Beyond its core testing function, the Split Hopkinson Bar System can be configured with optional measurement modules. These include high-speed camera integration, Digital Image Correlation (DIC), and a high/low-temperature environmental chamber.

The system's key features emphasize high precision, flexible configuration, user-friendly operation, and enhanced safety and durability. Its structure is designed to accommodate different testing requirements while supporting stable experimental operation and reliable data collection.

With equipment dimensions of approximately 5900 mm × 750 mm × 1200 mm (L × W × H), the Split Hopkinson Bar System is a complete testing platform for laboratories focused on dynamic material characterization.

As demand grows for a deeper understanding of material behavior under high strain-rate conditions, the Split Hopkinson Bar System offers a focused experimental approach for collecting dynamic mechanical data, developing material models, and supporting performance optimization across a wide range of research applications.
